Aluminium profiles are divided into architectural and industrial ones. Architectural aluminium profiles are used for the manufacture of products designed and developed by Alumil and marketed for all kinds of applications. As aluminium covers a particularly wide range of products and applications beyond those of Alumil, it is possible to mass-produce profiles according to the customer's requirements and orders. In this case, we refer to the industrial profile.
The term “Frame” generally refers to all those elements that are used to enclose the spans of the walls in a building. They can be divided into external (entrance doors, balcony doors, and windows) and internal (entrance doors and partitions). They may differ in construction material between aluminium, wood, PVC/plastic, steel, or iron. The term 'Aluminium System' refers to the overall construction of the window frame (profile and set of accessories), excluding the glazing. Aluminium systems also include pergolas, fences, railings, etc.
The frame type you choose is very important and depends on many factors. For example, the available space within the house (furniture, decoration, etc.), the window spans you want to cover, the aesthetics of the space and the building, and many other factors. You can see in detail all the types and further information about the categories so that you can more easily form an opinion on the suitable frame, but above all, the one you prefer for your space. It is necessary to seek the advice of an expert engineer who has the experience and expertise to suggest the most suitable system based on the requirements of your space.

Each feature is of special importance, and you should pay attention to all of them when choosing your frames. The key performance features to consider when selecting the right aluminium system are:

  • Thermal insulation

  • Security (burglary resistance)

  • Wind load resistance

  • Watertightness

  • Air permeability

  • Sound insulation

Lastly, you should consider that installing or replacing windows and doors is an important decision that can often be called a "life decision.” If you take into account the period of time that the systems remain in a home until they are replaced, then you realize that the choice should be particularly careful.

The reason for choosing a thermally insulated frame is very simple. Because it maintains the internal temperature, minimizing losses. In this way, greater efficiency and economy is achieved. However, you should think not only about the winter months, which represent the typical example to describe heat losses, but also the summer months. Due to the climate of each region and the high temperatures, it is essential that the cooling we try to achieve inside the house during summertime is contained and not channeled to the outside environment through the windows.
Aluminium is a good conductor of heat, i.e., it has the ability to transfer heat energy across its surface. Frames called "cold" do not incorporate a material that stops this thermal conductivity, and as a result, the external temperature is transferred unobstructed to the interior, and the losses of internal heating or cooling to the external environment are very high. To avoid these effects, a polyamide material is used, called "thermal break," as it stops heat transfer. Thus, aluminium thermally insulated systems maintain the conditions inside, capturing heat in the winter and cooling in the summer. Simply by lifting the gasket on the frame, you can easily identify if the system you have in your place is thermally insulated, as the thermal break material is visible both on the sash and around the frame (it just needs to lift the gasket a little).
The pane (or glazing) constitutes 70%-80% of the surface of a window frame. Thus, its effect on energy efficiency, sound insulation, and security is significant. There are many types of glazing that determine both the final performance of a frame and its aesthetics. If you want to approach a fabricator already knowing specific attributes for glazing, you can learn about the types and categories of glazing with specific features to make the right choice that will fully serve your needs.
Curtain wall systems are used as a building envelope and ensure maximum natural lighting in the internal space, creating a comfortable and safe environment for the people who use the building. Usually, they are found in big buildings covering their façade but in recent years, they can also be found in modern private residences covering any kind of window span, from a living room with a special view to a stairwell. In addition, aluminium curtain walls are also a very popular choice due to their high aesthetic value and the unlimited possibilities they offer in architectural applications. At Alumil, you will find a complete range of curtain walls that are divided into three (3) main categories: stick type (conventional), structural and unitized.
There is often a misconception between these two terms. However, curtain walls, which are a category of the aluminium systems family, should not be confused with glazing, which is a type of common panes.
Certainly not! You can choose from a wide range of colors and textures. Aluminium has an advantage over other materials as it can be coated in many ways. Dark or light colors, matt, smooth, metallic, or even brushed, with wood effects, Alumil’s systems know no limitations. You should consider that, apart from aesthetics, surface treatments (color & texture) are responsible for protecting aluminium profiles from the factors of the external environment and everyday use. They provide all those features to counteract corrosion, peeling, and discoloration. Therefore, correct application and the use of high-quality raw materials can determine the final product's value. Check out our surface treatment guide so you can make the best choice confidently.
Aluminium is a material that is significantly superior to any other material used in the construction of frames. It is a metal that does not rust and needs little to no maintenance, which makes its lifespan longer than that of plastic (PVC) and wood, with which, over time, natural wear is inevitable, and maintenance is necessary even on an annual basis. It is also suitable for several surface treatments. This helps you to make the right choice according to your requirements and needs.
The premium quality materials and high standards we ensure prolong the life of a system. However, as experts in the industry for over 30 years, we can give you some useful advice. Find out how you should clean and maintain a frame.

Choosing new frames is an investment that will last for many years, so you should pay attention during delivery and installation so that everything is properly done and avoid any unpleasant situations in the future. There are very important checks that should be made on the delivery of the frames, such as observation for external scratches and confirmation of Alumil's logo existence on every profile and component of the frame. In addition, the functionality of the frames should also be checked, and they should be perfectly straight with no inclination. Lastly, the testing varies according to each frame type (hinged, sliding, entrance doors, rolling shutters, and accessories). Therefore, you should get informed based on Alumil’s detailed inspection guide.

The aluminium profiles that are produced and receive surface treatments by Alumil (anodizing, powder coating, etc.) are offered to dealers and fabricators with the protective film (foil) bearing our company's logos. This film is removed during the installation of the systems in your place. If your systems are not protected by this film during installation, it does not necessarily mean that they are not Alumil, but most likely, they are uncoated profiles from our company that were requested as such by the dealer or fabricator in order to receive surface treatments by one of their partners. By installing aluminium systems that have passed every process certified by our company, you are ensuring the highest quality.

Finally, there are a number of further checks you can make during the installation of your new windows, and you can find them in detail in our comprehensive guide.

Part of our corporate philosophy and culture is the utmost respect towards nature, as well as the development and production of environmentally friendly products. These values ranked us among the 25 companies listed as  "The Most Sustainable Companies in Greece 2020" based on the data of the Sustainable Development Report presented in 2019. Our modern systems receive the EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) certification, a validated and registered statement, internationally recognized, providing transparent, quantified, and comparable data on a product's life cycle and environmental impact. Its main objective is to provide reliable, comparable, and verified information on the environmental footprint of products, covering their entire life cycle.

The term "life cycle of a product" (LCA) refers to the raw materials required, their packaging and transport to the production site, the production process of the product itself, its distribution to the customer network, and finally, its application.

Aluminium is 100% recycled (!) and is rightly described as a "green" metal. Aluminium, when recycled, can be easily separated from other materials without high costs. Moreover, recycling can be repeated indefinitely, producing a metal with properties comparable to those of primary aluminium. Lastly, the production of metal from the remelting of used and scrap aluminium requires only 5% of the energy needed to produce primary metal (that is made from bauxite).
Surface treatments refer to processes or techniques applied to the surface of a material to modify its properties or enhance its performance. These treatments include coatings, finishes, cleaning methods, and other surface modifications.
Surface treatments serve various purposes, such as improving the appearance, protecting against corrosion or wear, enhancing adhesion, reducing friction, providing insulation or conductivity, and altering surface properties to achieve specific functionalities.

Surface treatments offer several benefits, such as:

  • Enhanced durability and protection against corrosion, abrasion, or wear.
  • Improved aesthetics and visual appeal.
  • Increased chemical resistance.
  • Enhanced electrical or thermal conductivity.
  • Improved adhesion for bonding or coating applications.
  • Reduced friction or improved lubrication properties.
  • Alteration of surface energy or wettability.
Selecting the appropriate surface treatment depends on the desired properties, intended application, environmental conditions, budget, and regulatory requirements. Consulting with our fabricators can help you determine the best solution.
Some surface treatments may involve chemicals, coatings, or finishes that can have environmental implications. It's essential to consider the ecological impact and adhere to regulations regarding waste management, emissions, and the use of hazardous substances. At Alumil, our production lines are equipped with a green management system that ensures the elimination of toxic substances such as powders and chemicals. Additionally, we have implemented measures to reduce water consumption, all of which are in line with current environmental legislation.
The maintenance requirements for surface treatments vary depending on the type of treatment and the application. Some surface treatments may require periodic inspections, cleaning with specific methods or products, or other maintenance activities to ensure continued performance and longevity.
