18 March, World Recycling Day: Recycling today for a better tomorrow

World Recycling Day, established in 2018, is celebrated every year on 18 March in more than 175 countries worldwide, aiming to raise awareness among citizens, companies and governments about the importance of recycling and the circular economy for a sustainable future.

What is recycling: The process of collecting and processing waste for reusing it to make new products.

What is the circular economy: A model of production and consumption based on the reuse, repair and recycling of existing materials and products in order to extend their life cycle and minimise waste.

Is aluminium recycled?

Aluminium is a highly recyclable material as it can undergo a number of treatments without losing its characteristics. Its recyclability offers enormous flexibility in its use and has multiple environmental benefits, including energy savings in the production of secondary aluminium compared to primary aluminium, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and conservation of natural resources.

When we refer to the circular economy of aluminium, we mean that aluminium waste (scrap) is collected, sorted and processed into new materials and products, reducing the need for new aluminium mining, an energy-intensive and environmentally damaging process.

Recycling at ALUMIL

At ALUMIL, the values of sustainability and circular economy are at the heart of our business strategy. That is why we systematically invest in initiatives that contribute to the protection of our planet's natural resources. Below you will find our most important actions towards recycling:

  • Through our new aluminium scrap sorting and processing unit at our premises in Kilkis, we have increased by 25% the amount of recycled aluminium contained in the produced billets of our foundry, resulting in 75% of our annual production being based on recycled aluminium.

  • We recycle 35% of the total amount of water used in our facilities.

  • We increase the amount of recyclable raw materials, thus reducing our non-recyclable waste.

  • We use dedicated recycling bins in our offices in Thessaloniki and Kilkis and systematically educate our people about the importance and correct methods of recycling.

Recycling at home

Recycling is a simple process that we can integrate into our daily lives, contributing, also on an individual level, to the protection of the environment. Some ideas that you can easily adopt:

  • Create your recycling system by placing dedicated bins in your home to sort waste properly. Here you will find detailed information about the materials you can recycle.

  • Try home composting, drastically reducing your daily waste and creating natural fertiliser for your plants.

  • Recycle electrical appliances and donate or sell clothes and other items you no longer need, extending their life cycle.

  • Reduce the consumption of disposable items (plastic bags, water bottles, plates, cutlery, straws) and replace them with reusable items (cloth bags, coffee and water thermos, metal, or glass straws, etc.)

  • Look for products made from recycled materials, supporting the recycling industry and reducing the need for new raw materials.

Why is recycling important?

Last but not least, it is important to answer a very common question: "Why should I do it?" Recycling is important because it contributes:

  • To save resources, as it reduces the need to consume the Earth's natural resources.

  • To save energy, as the use of recycled materials in the production process consumes significantly less energy compared to the energy required to produce products from raw materials.

  • To protect the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

  • To reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and thus reduce methane emissions.
