Ložionica

Situation

The new Center for Creative Industries and Innovations, “Ložionica”, together with the eGovernment House, revitalizes the former Turntable, Locomotive Depot, and Water Tower of Belgrade Railway Station. By combining preserved industrial heritage with contemporary architecture, the project transforms a disused railway area into a strategic hub for innovation.

The connection between old and new is evident in the restoration of Ložionica, the Turntable, and the Water Tower, which is combined with contemporary structures and the introduction of new buildings within a sensitive, historically and culturally significant spatial context. The project’s complete architectural design was developed by AKVS Architecture as lead architects, with interior design by INKA Studio for the Ložionica building and MAPA Architects for the eGovernment House.

The core principle is to protect cultural and historical heritage while adding contemporary “implants” that reactivate the site and link it to today’s life. Within this framework, the eGovernment House acts as a visible “bridge”, bringing a new quality to the overall environment and adding a new layer of quality to Belgrade’s future creative development of society and science.

The spatial complex of the Ložionica - Locomotive Depot, Turntable, and Water Tower - forms a unique living document of Belgrade’s industrial heritage, reflecting both the evolution of railway technology and key moments in the lives of its citizens, reviving this long-disused ensemble so that its new role naturally extends the original railway spatial logic. It is worth noting that the advanced aluminium systems installed in the project met multiple technical and architectural requirements, enhancing the final result.
