J. Upton-Hansen: We approach every project as a new design opportunity
Jonas Upton Hansen, Founder and Lead Architect of UHA, talks about the firm’s journey from its first steps to its international growth, the design philosophy behind each project, how sustainability and Artificial Intelligence are already transforming architecture and construction, as well as his collaboration with ALUMIL on the impressive “Marco Polo” project in Limassol, Cyprus.
UHA: Global growth with consistent quality
Since 2011, UHA has grown rapidly, delivering projects in many countries. To maintain consistent quality and a shared design vision across multiple offices, Mr. Upton Hansen highlights the importance of clear processes, collaboration, and cloud-based workflows for shared BIM/Revit models, leveraging different time zones to accelerate project progress.
Design without a “recipe”
UHA does not follow a predetermined aesthetic. Each project begins as a new opportunity, approached with a fresh perspective and a strong focus on context. Location, climate, culture, the local market, lifestyle, and users’ needs are all taken into account—leading to the best solution for each specific project.
Marco Polo: Sustainability through “passive” measures
At the Marco Polo project in Limassol, Cyprus, sustainability starts at the design stage: shading strategies, proper orientation, large south-facing balconies, and reduced openings on the east/west façades to address low-angle sun exposure. At the same time, installing photovoltaic panels on the building’s cabanas boosts on-site energy generation.
The UHA–ALUMIL collaboration: Seamless indoor–outdoor living
To highlight the experience of living by the sea, ALUMIL’s architectural aluminium systems were selected for the project’s large, transparent façades. High transparency, ease of operation, durability, ease of installation, and the ability to accommodate large glass panels that open seamlessly onto terraces are the key features of the ALUMIL systems chosen for “Marco Polo”. The success of this choice is also reflected in the satisfaction expressed by both residents and contractors, as Mr Upton Hansen noted.
Artificial Intelligence: Acceleration, not replacement
Jonas sees Artificial Intelligence as a “super-tool” that enhances visualisation and animation workflows, and can even support processes related to legal documentation or Human Resources. At the same time, AI can “learn” from historical architectural project data, helping enable more efficient and more ambitious projects in the future.
